Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is a popular coastal town located on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, known for its beautiful beaches, laid-back atmosphere, and excellent surf spots. It’s a hotspot for both local and international travelers, especially those looking to surf, relax, or enjoy nature.

The bay itself is relatively small but offers a long stretch of golden sand, which is perfect for both surfing and sunbathing. The area is famous for its consistent waves, with breaks like "Main Point" attracting surfers from around the world, particularly during the peak surf season between April and October.

Beyond surfing, Arugam Bay has a chill vibe with several beachfront cafes, guesthouses, and small shops offering a variety of local and international food. The nearby nature reserve, Kumana National Park, is home to a variety of wildlife, including elephants, leopards, and numerous bird species.

The town is still somewhat off the beaten path compared to more developed tourist destinations, which gives it a unique charm. It also has a growing yoga and wellness scene for people looking for more peaceful experiences.

Pottuvil Point

Pottuvil Point is where the ocean, scenic countryside and the peaceful lagoon meet. It’s a somewhat exposed point break, with offshore winds coming in from the west/southwest. The point also receives a mixture of windswells and groundswells, usually from the south/southeast.

Panama Tank, also known as Crocodile Point, is a lush, green wonderland of sorts! The tank is located about 430km from Colombo, and is about 14km from Pottuvil Point. The ride to Panama Tank from Arugam Bay is short, lasting about 20 minutes overall, but the short drive will take you through numerous sceneries, all of which are quite Instagram-worthy.

Bordering Yala National Park, Arugam Bay is fortunate enough to have tons of wildlife on its outskirts, and a part of this biodiversity can be witnessed at Crocodile Rock as well. This is mainly due to the fact that it’s sandwiched between patches of jungle and the ocean.

Elephant Rock

Elephant Rock, named after the rock’s supposed resemblance to an elephant, is an extremely popular surf spot for beginners, located only 4km away from Arugam Bay. Although Elephant Rock may be well known, it is one of the least crowded beaches on the island, largely due to its lack of road access. To get here you must take a tuk tuk, get dropped off at the main road, and from there it’s just a small walk, scramble, and (sometimes) wade to get to the point.

A lush green mangrove forest surrounds Pottuvil lagoon, and it is a common sight to see mischievous Sri Lanka Macaque Monkeys jumping from tree to tree. Another relatively common sight is seeing large crocodiles basking in the sun on the banks of the lagoon or on nearby rocks, looking deceivingly calm, and to see one of these animals is exhilarating, to say the least. But the best-kept secret about the lagoon is that it is a fantastic place to spot elephants; many elephants come here in the evening as a way to cool off and you can watch them frolic in the water from a safe distance.
